ABOUT HEALING DOULA

After traumatic births and 2 c sections later a real passion for pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding was born. But what to do with 2 toddlers and a baby on the way?

While researching for myself as I aspire to be the best doula one can be to assist other women, we found to be pregnant with our 3rd baby. The hours and hours of research became an "obsession" in my quest to a successful VBA2C.

During all of this realized I needed to share my findings and assist other women where possible on this so desired VBA2C. As we all know it's not easy the fear that we get thrown at us most times whilst on the other hand the super supportive VBAC groups on facebook where us women support and encourage each other constantly without any judgement.

This page is under construction as my doula course was put on hold due to the pregnancy, the blogs are updated with relevant evidence based research and information that will assist us in our journey to a safe and successful pregnancy, delivery (vbac).

A Spinning Babies training was completed and boy was that healing and eye opening at the same time. The "quilt", the "inability to birth" was taken away from me a burden of my shoulders knowing that both the c sections quite possibly could have been avoided if I knew or my carers knew what I know now.

My passion is becoming a doula, lactation consulant and when the children are a bit older study to become an osteopath with a specialty in obstetrics.

Catering to all women.

Enough about me,

What is a Doula??

A doula is a trained and experienced professional and provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period, and will not leave her side. It is important to understand that doulas are not medical professionals, nor judge you for your choices.

The presence of a doula during your labor can reduce the need for a surgical birth (c-section) by 40-60%.

Overall, women who received continuous support were more likely to have spontaneous vaginal births and less likely to have any pain medication, epidurals, negative feelings about childbirth, vacuum or forceps-assisted births, and C-sections. In addition, their labors were shorter by about 40 minutes and their babies were less likely to have low Apgar scores at birth.

For most of these outcomes,* the best results occurred when woman had continuous labor support from a doula— someone who was NOT a staff member at the hospital and who was NOT part of the woman’s social network. When continuous labor support was provided by a doula, women experienced a:

  • 31% decrease in the use of Pitocin (syntocinon UK)*

  • 28% decrease in the risk of C-section*

  • 12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth*

  • 9% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief

  • 14% decrease in the risk of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery

  • 34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience*
